STUBBORN AS A MULE
The Sex and Sweet Tea Series
by Juliette Poe

Down in Whynot, NC, there are three things that hold true: 1) life moves just a little bit slower, 2) family means everything, and 3) you don’t mess with history.

When his family decides to sell a home that’s been part of their history for over a century, Lowe Mancinkus is madder than a hornet. To add insult to injury, the woman who purchased it is some fancy pants, city girl looking to fix it up and sell it off. Doesn’t matter that she’s sexy as hell or that just being near her gets his blood racing like never before. That home belongs to his family, or at least it did until she came to town.

Well that just won’t do, now will it?

From the moment that she laid eyes on the historical home in rural North Carolina, Melinda Rothschild knew Mainer House was something special. The perfect escape from life in New York City, Melinda signed the papers and set to work restoring the house to its natural beauty. That is until an angry Lowe showed up on her doorstep one day. With a scowl on his handsome, chiseled face. And a shotgun in his strong, muscular arms.

Is it getting hot in here?

Melinda’s about to get a lesson on life in the south, but Lowe is about to learn a lesson of his own – this city girl doesn’t back down from a fight.

Stubborn As A Mule is the second book in The Sex and Sweet Tea series but can be read as a standalone. I absolutely adored this book, it was southern sweetness at its best.

Stubborn As a mule follows Lowe who is outraged that his historical home has been brought by a stuck up Yank who is just going fix it and flip it and he not having it. He decides the best course of action is to paint it pink and threaten the builders with a shotgun, it would only happen in the small town of Whynot.

This story was just so refreshing, it's a sweet romance with sex implied and it was just so different from reading books with sex scene after sex scene. The romance was so slow burn and I can't help using the word sweet because it just was. There is some really sweet romantic scenes in this book and I swooned at them. The characters where so engaging and the town of Whynot was such a big character itself. The people in it where such that of a southern town I loved it.

Though out the book you get snippets from people around the town speculating on Mely the Yank who brought the house and Lowe who is our house painting villian ;)and there relationship and it just made the story so much fun. The cast of characters where so good, and I just want to visit Floyd at his hardware store and call into Sweet cakes bakery for a cupcake.

I really enjoyed the writing and could picture myself there with the characters. The Story is told in duel POV and I just think it suited the story perfectly.

Overall I highly recommend Stubborn As a mule it's a quick, fun, sweet southern romance and I can't wait to read more about Whynot in upcoming books. 4 massive stars!

Excerpt

“What are we looking at?” she whispered out of the side of her mouth, pursing her lips together and giving him an insane urge to kiss them.
“What?”
“I assumed since we’re standing here you must be looking at something, and I wanted to join in the fun. Or did you not realize we weren’t moving?”
Her nostrils flared and she bit her lip. Dan realized she was trying not to laugh. Now he really wanted to kiss her, to capture her mouth with his, to make her his own. Before he could act on it, his stomach growled.
“Was that yours or mine?” She looked at him, an eyebrow raised.
His lips twitched. His breath hitched. He couldn’t keep his amusement to himself any longer. It bubbled in his chest, and he let it out as he shook his head.
“Okay, while I am older than you, I’m not old enough to be senile. Yet. So yes, I did know we weren’t moving. But thanks for that. And yes, my stomach growled, because I’m hungry. Except I think I need to put eating on hold for a moment, because what I need more than anything else right now, what I’ve needed all night long in fact, is to kiss you.”
AUTHOR BIO:

When I was a little girl and couldn’t fall asleep, my mother would tell me to make up a story. Pretty soon, my head was filled with these stories and the characters that populated them. Each character had a specific personality, a list of likes and dislikes, and sometimes, even a specific accent or dialect. Even as an adult, I think about the characters and stories at night before I fall asleep, or in the car on my way to or from one of my daughters’ numerous activities (hey, anything that will drown out their music is a good thing).

One day, I started writing them down (it was either that or checking into the local mental hospital—the computer was way less scary) and now I'm a published author. My first book, A Heart of Little Faith, was just declared a Finalist in the Fiction: Romance category of the 2016 Best Book Awards.

In the real world, I’m the mother of two amazing daughters and wife of one of the smartest men I know. I enjoy spending time with my family and friends, reading, traveling and watching TV. In between chauffeuring my daughters to after-school activities that require an Excel spreadsheet to be kept straight, I run youth group activities, train the dog we recently adopted from a local shelter, and cook dinners that fit the needs of four very different appetites. I also write freelance articles for magazines, newspapers, and edit newsletters.

When all of that gets overwhelming, I retreat to my computer, where I write stories that let me escape from reality. In my made-up world, the heroines are always smart, sassy and independent. The heroes are handsome and strong with just a touch of vulnerability. If I don’t like a character, I can delete him or her; if something doesn’t work, I can rewrite it. It’s very satisfying to be in control of at least one part of my life. My inspiration comes from watching the people around me and fantasizing about how I’d do things differently.

How has your summer been so far?

Summer Reading Recommendations from YA Contemporary to some sexy adult romances!

We are in full summer swing, where trips to the beach and wine by the pool are on the horizon. What better way to relax by the pool or on the beach than with a good book. Today I have some summer reading recommendations that you maybe haven't heard of before. Enjoy!

First some fun adult contemporary romances!

Holly's Inbox by Holly Denham is a fun rom com that I adored back when I read it a few years ago. It's written entirely in emails and is about Holly as she starts her job as a receptionist at a city investment bank. With know experience and not a clue what she's doing, adding in some crazy friends and family and Holly's Inbox makes for a fun, quick summer read. (Goodreads )

Click the first book in the Click Trilogy by Lisa Becker is another fun adult rom com that I read back in the summer of 2011 and it was such a fun book to read, I laughed, I cringed and I cheered along with Renee and her friends. Again this book is told in emails between our main protagonist Renee and her best friends and her online suitors. Did I mention it's about online dating? This is so relevant to today and makes for a fun laugh out loud summer read. The whole trilogy is available for you to binge one after the other which I highly recommend. (Goodreads / my review of Click )

How about some fun YA contemporary romances

The Statistical Probability Of Love At First Sight was my first Jennifer E Smith book and I really enjoyed it when I read it back in 2012. Hadley is flying to London for her dads wedding. Oliver is flying home to London. If Hadley had made her first flight she would never have met Oliver and the events that occurred due to them meeting would never have happened. Imagine being four minutes late for your flight. Those four minutes changed everything for Hadley. The Statistical Probability Of Love At First Sight is about forgiveness, regret, growing up, understanding people and falling in love. A perfect summer read. (Goodreads / my review )

Fool Me Twice by Mandy Hubbard is a cute summer read. Mackenzie our leading lady fell in love with Landon, a cute cowboy at Serenity Ranch & Spa. Landon broke Mackenzie's heart after a whirlwind summer romance and Mackenzie spent a year in his present at school heartbroken. Flash forward to the present and Mackenzie and Landon are back at Serenity Ranch & Spa and she can know longer ignore Landon. After a nasty fall on the ranch, Landon doesn't remember breaking up with Mackenzie que hilarious "revenge" on Landon. The pranks played in this book are so funny and reminded me of The Parent Trap (1999). A fun laugh out loud read. Goodreads / my review )

How about some younger YA, good for both your teens 12-14 years and yourself

Me Suzy P by Karen Saunders is a fun entertaining read. Its fresh and engaging and the protagonist Suzy Puttock is a typical 14 year old who is a total disaster magnet and the predicaments Suzy finds herself in will have you laughing out loud. A quick, fun read exploring first love, friendship and the awkwardness of being a teenager. (Goodreads / My review )

The IT Girl is a hilarious first book in the IT Girl series by Katy Birchall. It's a fun, cute and just made me smile throughout. Anna our quirky protagonist is such fun to read about. Anna is trying to adapt to living in London since her dad became famous with his book, he's engaged to a famous actress and Anna has found herself the new IT Girl of London. You will fall in love with Anna and all her friends and of course there is a cute, quirky guy. (Goodreads / my review )

To Finish the list why not some sexy adult romances

First up one of my favorite reads of the year, Royal Affair, the first book in the Royal Scandal Trilogy (bonus the whole trilogy is available to read now). Royal Affair is a great romance, that has depth, some hot sex, love and the joy of discovering each other with a nice plot underneath. (Goodreads / my review )

Finally any Jodi Ellen Malpas book. Jodi writes sexy alpha males, sexy sex scenes and plots that will keep you on your toes your head will be spinning. We have the This Man Trilogy, One Night Trilogy, The Protector and upcoming summer release The Protector.

Blog Tour: Review - Trust by Kylie Scott

Today I have a review of Trust by Kylie Scott. Thank you to Inkslinger PR for the review copy

Synopsis

Being young is all about the experiences: the first time you skip school, the first time you fall in love…the first time someone holds a gun to your head. After being held hostage during a robbery at the local convenience store, seventeen year old Edie finds her attitude about life shattered. Unwilling to put up with the snobbery and bullying at her private school, she enrolls at the local public high school, crossing paths with John. The boy who risked his life to save hers. While Edie’s beginning to run wild, however, John’s just starting to settle down. After years of partying and dealing drugs with his older brother, he’s going straight—getting to class on time, and thinking about the future. An unlikely bond grows between the two as John keeps Edie out of trouble and helps her broaden her horizons. But when he helps her out with another first—losing her virginity—their friendship gets complicated.Meanwhile, Edie and John are pulled back into the dangerous world they narrowly escaped. They were lucky to survive the first time, but this time they have more to lose—each other.

Trust is my first Kylie Scott book and I really enjoyed it. It's a YA/NA  definitely more on the NA side. The characters are 17 and 18 years old and the story involves, drugs, violence and sex.

Trust is focused on our leading lady Edie. Who after being involved in an armed robbery and being held hostage leaves her questioning everything. Taking more risks, rebeling and trying to do things she wants to do because you never know when life ends. During the armed robbery Edie was saved by John who she crosses paths with and starts to form a close bond.

I liked Edie and her trauma at being involved in the robbery felt realistic. She sees a therapist which I did want to see more of. But the thoughts in Edie`'s head and her actions felt very realistic after the trauma. John I adored he just got himself into a situation and is now  trying to get himself out of it he wants a future. I enjoyed seeing the characters together. John's friend Anders brought some light relief and  I would love to know more about him. I enjoyed seeing Edies group of new friends it was diverse in ethnicity and sexuality. I would have loved to learn and see more of these characters but I understand it's Edies story.

What I did struggle with throughout the story at times was the writing. I felt I just wanted it to be a bit more descriptive but overall the pacing of the book was great.

In the end I enjoyed Trust it explores adolescence themes and trauma in a true way and the book had a real authentic feel to it. Throw in some romance and it was a good book. 3 stars to Trust by Kylie Scott.

Damien Fox lived up to his name. Cunning, sly, and dangerous, fifty percent of Vegas’ strip clubs were his.

I wanted him to go to hell on a first-class ticket.
He played a dirty game, and I followed his rules. I let him think he would win.

Despite our differences, it was clear to see that we were no more than two broken hearts colliding in the darkness.

Happy Release Day to Beautiful Mistake by Vi Keeland get your hands on a copy now!

The first time I met Caine West was in a bar.
He noticed me looking his way and mistakenly read my scowling as checking him out.
When he attempted to talk to me, I set him straight—telling him what I thought of his lying, cheating, egomaniacal ass.
You see, the gorgeous jerk had wined and dined my best friend--smooth talking her into his bed, all along failing to mention that he was married.

He deserved every bit of my tongue-lashing and more for what he'd done. Especially when that lazy smile graced his perfect face in response to my rant. Only it turned out, the man I'd just told off wasn't the right guy.
Oops.  My mistake.  Embarrassed, I slunk out without an apology.
I was never going to see the handsome stranger again anyway, right?

That’s what I thought…until I walked into class the next morning.
Well, hello Professor West, I’m your new teaching assistant.
I’ll be working under you…figuratively speaking.
Although the literal interpretation might not be such a bad thing—working under Professor West.
This was going to be interesting…

Teaser from The Forbidden

Keeping his eyes on mine, he calls to the barman. “Two tequilas, please.”
“Tequila,” I muse, looking over my shoulder when the salt and lemon land behind me. “Is that my challenge?”
“Crying off?” he goads, reaching into his pocket and pulling out some notes.
“Never,” I scoff, turning into the bar. I don’t know what his game is, but I want to play. With him. “You’re asking me to prove I’m sober by doing a shot?” I narrow my eyes on him, teasing. “Or is your plan to get me drunk and take advantage of me?”
He smiles to himself as he pays the barman. “You don’t look like the kind of woman who could be taken advantage of.”
“What kind of woman do I look like, then?” I challenge quietly.
He turns into me, watching me for a few moments. “I don’t know, but I think I’d like to find out.”
I hold his gaze for a few seconds, no retort coming to me. I think I want him to find out, too, just as much as I want to find out what kind of man he is. My eyes drop from his sparkling greys, down his tall, lean frame to his feet.
Oh…fuck…
“Let’s play,” he says, moving in closer and pulling one of the glasses forward. I don’t mean to, but I yank my arm away abruptly when he brushes against me, startled by the tiny stabs of pleasure that pitter-patter all over my skin. The fleeting touch tells me he would feel as good as he looks, and—give me strength—he smells divine, all manly and earthy and fucking edible.
The sudden lapse in movement and talking from both of us becomes slightly awkward. I can feel him looking down at me.
“What do I have to do?” I ask again quietly, almost on a breathy gasp.
He clears his throat. “You’re not drunk?”
“Not even the slightest bit.” I raise my nose in the air.
“Good. Then you’ll smash this challenge first time.” He places a finger on the brim of one of the shot glasses. “Brace your palms on the edge of the bar,” he orders, firm but softly. I look at him, finding a serious face. “Go on.”
Frowning, I place my hands on the edge of the bar. “Okay?”
He takes my hips. He takes my fucking hips! I freeze from top to toe and swallow hard, waiting. My insides are quickly furling, my mind in chaos. “Move back a bit,” he says, pulling at them a little until I step back.
Oh, Jesus. I’m on fire. I have a strange man bending me over a bar in public, and me, Annie I’m-immune-to-men Ryan, isn’t fighting him off. It’s like he has me under a spell. What gives? I dare not look behind me. I’m not stupid enough to think Lizzy isn’t currently watching a man manipulate my body to where he wants it.
“You feel tense,” he observes, releasing me and moving back to my side.
I don’t deny it; neither do I confirm it. His big hands felt so good resting on my hips, so much so I have to resist not claiming them and putting them back where they were. “What now?” I ask, evidently struggling for air, damn me.
“Now.” He picks up his beer and grins. “I get to gloat that I had you bent over a bar within five minutes of meeting you.” He takes a swig, still grinning, and I hear the roar of a man down the bar laughing his head off.
Oh, the fucker! Part of me has admiration. Another part of me wants to slap him stupid; I don’t care how beautiful he is. And another part of me wants to rip his clothes from his body and ravish the sly bastard.
I cannot believe I fell for it! How many women has he played like a fiddle? I drop my head, shaking it to myself.
I knew that smile was dangerous. A man who can bend a woman to his will so easily and so soon couldn’t be anything less than lethal. And the fact that he got me with his wicked game means hats off to him. I can’t possibly take that away from him, and since I’m lacking in the dignity department right now, I decide not to slap him. Nor will I chuck a drink over his head, or fire a load of verbal abuse at him.
I’ll do what he least expects.
I push myself up and turn to face him, unable to stop myself from smiling at his half-grin. Holding his gaze, I slowly lick the back of my hand, blindly take the salt off the bar, sprinkle a bit, and take one of the shots of tequila. But as I’m taking my hand to my mouth to lick the salt up, he seizes my wrist and takes the shot from my other hand. My heartbeat accelerates, our eyes glued to each other as he moves into me and slowly brings my hand to his mouth. I watch, gripped, as he lazily licks up the salt from the back of my hand, eyes on mine, and then knocks the tequila back. Kill me now, for I will certainly die a happy woman. His tongue on my skin. His eyes boring into mine. His hold of my wrist. I must look like a statue—unable to talk, move, or think clearly.
“There’s one more tequila,” he says, cocking his head toward the bar but keeping me in his sights. “And it’s yours.”
Oh good lord. My heart is speeding up by the second as I watch him lick the back of his hand and sprinkle some salt. Then he offers it to me. I stare at his hand, and then slowly look up at him. I could get lost in those grey glittery eyes.
“I taste good,” he whispers.
